Reading Complexity : Final

2. Thoroughfare through Pak Klong Talat

This is where Latour's text is applied, " Looking at a crowd or a troop of horses we will be less aware of the exact loss of detail because we will tend to expect that the members of this mass will be identical and read them accordingly....where we are reading  and where we are 'reading in'. ( 99 Perception of Order). Would the quality of an object being shown in mass act as a deviation to the eye, or would it still have a potential to stand out taken before that you have not witnessed it before. Here is where ornamentation, elevation, framing, orientation, symmetry would provide as catalysts in provoking beauty which causes the viewer to 'read in' rather than merely read. The further Phase would continue in playing with the viewer's order of perception based on visual hierarchy, contrast and shifting. Can we control their attention when communicating the information through a virtual space including the Throne and the Chair?

The diagram of the thoroughfare deals in explaining possibilities of things that were easy to look at but were not paid attention to, due to its pre-conceived notion of textured quality. The pink strokes explain the areas that were brightly perceived and the rest in grey are the other things that were not paid attention to but could have laid eyes upon. The final thoroughfare shifts from a journeying through a narrow area towards a high ceiling roofed area( a change in threshold of spaces) where my eyes pan around.

The final video for my journey through the Pak Klong Talat deals in highlighting things that occur at the same time but our eyes judges in providing attention only to contrasting elements at a limited spanning duration.

READING COMPLEXITY

This video shows my perception and experience I went through while taking this thoroughfare of the Chinese Temple Wat Leng Nei Yi 2. From my experience I have developed a way of seeing and have come to a conclusion that the richness of the physical form and appearance of an architecture or even a certain object can have a psychological impact to on you, triggering your mind and pull out your memory to be present to your inner consciousness again. Here the blue highlighted objects are the ones that i have my visual focus on which can trigger me to think of another unrelated subject that is shown on another screen on the right, representing my inner thoughts at that specific moment.

Here is the drawing of my thoroughfare which shows the path I've taken from the starting point to the ending point. The blue glowing line shows the specific route I took during the walk. The blue cones represent the glances I've taken which i didn't really put enough attention to call it a visual focus. The green cones are the view scape that I and a high attention on. the highlighted dark blue objects are the ones that I have my highest visual focus. The elements with only lines are the area that have not been observe by my eyes yet my mind tend to create and fulfill the undiscovered space on its own due to the pure symmetry and continouse repitition of the design.

2. READING COMPLEXITY

This video is a 34 second extract from the total length of 183 seconds that illustrates my very own perceptive experience of proceeding through unfamiliar semiotic urban settings of a busy street in Sampeng, Chinatown, Bangkok. It mainly focuses on the perception of visual and sonic data. The particular street block was enclosed by old shophouses. Both sidewalks were occupied by stands and people selling various types of things which also took up space of the street itself. This forced people to walk in the middle of the street which slowed down the vehicular traffic.

I have manipulated the video of the thoroughfare to portray information, both first hand and post analyzed, of my perception at that specific moment. It mainly focuses on how immediate proximity affected the process of spatial analysis and anticipation to react to such instances. By positioning myself as the "Thing", a measuring device, the grid is then set as a unit of measurement. The blue red colors expanding from the origin point measure and analyze my anticipation according to the immediate environment. When any obstacles to my walking path decision is presented and spotted, the blue turns to red. This resulted in the change of direction.

The drawing illustrates the information I perceived visually along the thoroughfare. The main orange lines are present at every three seconds. And within those three seconds, another set of lines subdivided time into 15 intervals, each equals to 0.05 second. The lines originate from my point of view at each specific location. Their lengths represent what I had my eyes on at that immediate proximity. Things that I attended to are shown with higher opacity while things that I looked at and had no impact in the process of spatial analysis and extrapolation are shown with only their outlines.

At every three seconds, black outline of my body is visible in order to describe my body orientation in relation to my cone of vision.

The blue lines indicate assessment of my orientation in that immediate environment. The length of the blue lines within the three-second interval indicates the speed at which I walked. Its length from the beginning to the end also sums up how much space I occupied for 2:03 minutes of the thoroughfare.

Reading Complexity Final Update - CHINA TOWN

This is the diagram drawing of the thoroughfare that shows the path that I had walked in the central China Town district. The red frame that projects out alone the beginning of walk till the end is the camera angle base on my perspective. This camera view point projects out from the height of 160 meters base on the position of my eyes. There are 28 projection frames that capture every 2 second that I walk along the path. Within these frames, there are what i intended to see and not intended to see. (looking it together with the video of what walk).

Thoroughfare : Shop-machine at Talingchan in Bangkok

The thoroughfare has a lot of obstructions on the ground. Other than experiencing the environment, The focus and attention were given to the ground and making decision among the possible paths. Seeing attending and focus are represented by pixel, desaturated image and circle of saturated image.

THOROUGHFARE ISO + VIDEO UPDATES

The diagram illustrated the thoroughfare of me walking in Khaosan road, Bangkok, as it is my first time there, so there are so many thing to look at. The interesting part in this path is the elements that create the environment of the space. These linked with the thing phase in the beginning because the function of the elements are to spread the information to the people walking pass by to tell them about what kind of space they are in. SO in the video i try to mask the elements that gave me information about the space while walking.

At Papaya Ware house, Ladprao, Thailand

I choose the Papaya Warehouse as my thoroughfare, because it linked from the Thing and Counterthing phase that look into the value of the appearance, While the value could show their identity and also can hide it among others.

The Papaya Warehouse that gather a lot of antique object in the same splendid place, giving the new experience through the route that i walked into, scanning and looking with different kind of the object and try to extract the value behind it.

The video show the hierarchy of vision experience through the numerous chairs in front, the hierarchy was categorise into;

My value that i presents it on the black background with star shining along, to represent my attention deeply to the specific object that may make my visions ignore others object along my way.

Value among others contact, i presents in as a glowing light around the colour object and blacken down others object in the scene, showing the prominent vision to the object.

Financial value: which i create the moving dash line around the object with the filling colour together to show the filling on value and financial way.

Diagram of Thoroughfare

The diagram show the visions along the way the represent by the cone of vision along the way directly project to the specific attention object that present in blue colour with the arrow to show the sequence of the attention object along the way. Also with all the orange frame that show the attention point with in every 5 second of camera scene and the projection box to the scene. The purple gradient rendering show the vision that the quality of looking inside the area.

Reading Complexity: Phase 2 Process

In the updated Thing and Counterthing Diagram, I show the comparison of how each works in its own context. The Saweta Chatra Throne being a communicative tool for the king to his people acts in its uniqueness by showering authority and power, nominating itself through consequent levelled platforms accompanied with ornamentation depicting culture. The Throne made once for one particular King makes it one in the world hence placed in the Museum to comprehend the rest of Thailand's ruling history.Similarly the Barcelona Chair was made in order to accompany Mies' Barcelona Pavilion and later only made for the Spanish King and Queen to be sat on and taken a picture of. The chair followed its inspiration from the Curule Seat which has similar curvature on its legs again drawing a context where the chair is only used by political/military power generals to depict symbol of authority.

However, the Barcelona chair loses its uniqueness and nomination value once mass manufactured. While the Throne is set in a more religious and royal setting, the chair is used in official business context. Similarly, the thoroughfare leads into a journey of Pak Klong Talat (Flower Market) where each bunch of flowers having equal potential to nomination within the context of a selling market ; where your eye pans around waiting to judge the matter of concern, here being the orchids. The video highlights the mass objects showing the potential possibility of where my eye could wander to a distance, but highlights my attention to only some due to the vibrant colors, here as a matter of fact. Part where I approach the orchids acts as pre-conceived notion of exploring things (driven by motive and curiosity) that have not been experienced before. Would the green+violet orchid have provoked me the same way, had it appeared in mass quantity? Maybe not. Maybe yes.

Reading Complexity: update VALUE video and combine Thing drawing

Video: My VALUE

Video: VALUE among the context

Updated drawing: trying to combine thing and counter thing together.

Updated drawing: Overlapping of the Beast car while the scale Palanquin inside.

The updated work which now i'm trying to finish up my video first.
For the video i separate the VALUE into 3 different categories: My VALUE, VALUE among context and Financial VALUE. Which is now i still can't think of the financial value.
My VALUE i present it in the masking the video and have black background to show that i'm attention to this object and it value to me that i may ignore others things for a while.
VALUE among context, which i show it in the glowing around the object and use black and white background to fade out others object to prominent the VALUE object while masking it as a colour

Drawing that i tried to combine it all together into the same scale to show the different usage and size of the object, while trying to put the explode axon all around in semi-circlr shape, which still i think i cant finish it for tomorrow pinup, because i need to finish up the video first.

Updated drawing and video of thoroughfare

Here's the new version of the ISO drawing of the thoroughfare I have created. Parts of the buildings that are rendered are those that were within my cones of vision throughout the 2:03 minutes of the thoroughfare. The orange lines indicate what I had my eyes on at that specific point in time. The main lines are present at every three seconds. And within that three second, I have broken it down into 15 intervals, each equals to 0.05 second. I have also drawn a black outline of my body to show my orientation and which direction I turned to at every three seconds. Things that I attended to (people, stands, carts, cars, ...) at every three seconds are of higher opacity.

The blue lines represent the assessment of my orientation in that immediate proximity, where I anticipate to walk to according to what were in the way and how they affected my decision. The length of the blue lines within the three-second interval indicates the speed at which I walked. This also sums up how much space I occupied for 2:03 minutes.

And this is the updated video. The blue, similar to the drawing, shows what my anticipation was at that moment. If it turns red, it means that something had come in the way which resulted in the change of direction.

Visual Complexity Update

I have increased the accuracy of this isometric, instead of pin pointing the object I added the visual cone so that the viewer is able to know the range and width of my vision within each scene. The blue cone indicates the vision I barely pay attention on. The green cone indicates vision of higher attention. The dark blue highlighted area are the objects I pay close attention too.

This video shows my visual attention towards certain objects within the scene. The blue highlights is my visual focus and the videos playing beside it is when certain object have a psychological impact to me and triggers my brain to create various images inside my mind.

VDO UPDATES

The color mask's object is an element that use for creating an environment. The object is acting like a mask that role play to tell about the thoroughfare or a person. And the grid shows the emptiness of the space, how the space looks like at first without all the elements. Therefore, without all these elements the space has no meaning.

Now I'm stuck on how to make a 3 sides perspective grid and how to crop the grid to make it into the shape of a building. So that's why in the last picture I'm making a shape to illustrated the original shape of a building.

Update: Reading Complexity Video

Latour mentions about the difference of reading and reading -in when the eye travels through a space. This focuses on perceiving mass objects with uniform color size shape, all merging into as one to form a texture that remains in our brain automatically disregarding the details. As i travel through the flower market, it is visible to see the difference of textures varying from sizes to colors and the eye recollects it framing them as a complete texture with indefinite organic boundaries merging into each other. But this becomes more evident when I view smaller fraction of flowers arranged together but placed to each other forming images and not textures due to its contrasting variations.
In the video, I play with it by highlighting the edge to show the specific textures boundary each gaining its own space.

Update: video

I intended to hi-lighting out the relationship of the seller and the buyer by drawing white lines around the edge of their bodies that I saw from particular perspective of views.

Updated video with new parameter enable/disable and path selection

I set parameter for this video to link with the statement of how to read thing and counterthing.

enable and disable  because I was focus on walking path so the environment was disable for a moment and I choose pixelate to illustrate some part that was disable.

path selection wet soil make it harder to walk so I use grid to tell different the wet and dry area and this  unstable grid will shape the selected path. (wet area will be distort grid which is not shown in this images yet)

Reading Complexity: Updated isometric drawing

Test rendering with red light (with GI light) to represent the vision of attention

Test rendering with spotlight (without GI light)

Final isometric drawing with different conditions and level of visions

Zoom in details

Updated drawing with added elements of level of visions and different aspect of visual experience, using the cone, frames, render part of vision and attraction object.

For the video still can not uploaded into the vimeo, but mainly would be masking the attention object such as chairs and others object.

Updates on video

As I have adjusted the horizontal plane to the correct perspective, the result came out as these images above. In the first picture, the distance between the person in front of me and myself equals to about 60-70 centimeters. In the second picture, the front of the car was about 1-1.1 meters away.

The grid is 50 x 50 centimeters and its depth equals to 15.5 meters. However, most of the objects/people I attended to were within the first 2.5 meters as seen in this top view of the scene. The yellow lines are the masks which symbolize the things I looked at and attended to. Things that I attended to will be differentiated by cross(es) that will be moving and changing colors according to the object's impact on my decision to react within that immediate space.

However. I have run into a technical problem. The top picture is what the crosses/grid should look like over the video but now the horizontal plane is faded. I'm not sure if this happens because of the masks I drew on the grid layer or not.

***Problem Resolved***
