Virtual Pavilion : First Draft

In this stage, I am focusing on creating a natural platform that aids in setting up the required environment for the pavilion. I may further go on to expanding the landscape or not, since it depends on what parameter I decide for interpreting the thing, counter-thing information. This is not the virtual pavilion but just a backdrop to question my concept which revolves around framing, orientation, symmetry, nomination, elevation, visual hierarchy and contrast. The challenge is that I already create a visual hierarchy through the natural setting that clearly speaks in providing the highest points, here being the peaks of the mountains, the higher being the most visually important. So, the placement of the throne and chair is questioned since we are required to position it somewhat center. But as matter of fact, elevation already serves as a 'given' here.

The further process would include in building the pavilion around the given site and use elements of framing, contrasting ornamentation or elevated platforms. From these, I will play with the scale of the object, information/ graphic, analytic data as to where one is placed according to its degree of importance/value. I may place something seemingly valuable at the peak of the mountain just to excite the visitor (i.e. provide a framing so intricately fascinating visible from below), but it may just end up acting as an ornament for a small information/object. The navigation would include in walking, travelling by boat and some means of mechanics too.

The diagram depicts an elevated natural platform with abstract points of visual hierarchy, but these will be questioned when elemental ornamentations are added further.

  1. Hi Ash.
Very interesting start! I think the use of a landscape in diagrammatic terms sound very interesting. Consider the scale if the landscape against the scale of your things. Perhaps shift in a landscape at the scale of a garden or park could be better as you will still be able to see the thing and its context no matter where you are in the garden (not the right word perhaps but anyway. You also need a way to control the shifts in the landscape so that it may all be read and have meaning. If you create a grid for instance, either orthogonal or radial or otherwise then each point in space would have a unique meaning. Up means importance as you say, but what about the planar dimensions? Another interesting problem is of course regarding the matter of subjectivity. Important, to whom? Perhaps the level on which the object is and where you are could be in flux. And read differently depending on where you are. Perhaps walkways at different elevations. Other navigation systems that you mentions. Consider Also the other information you have, and information you might need to acquire.
