So the visitor of the virtual space is like the audience in the audience - performer relationship of the THING/COUNTERTHING. The visitor can start walk from any direction in X and Y axis to experience the THING/COUNTERTHING information in general, likes shape on top of the mountain and material in the floating screen. Also the visitor can get the basic information of the story of the character while walking through the outer plain. And when he or she come to the audience's inner ring zone, he or she can watch the performance and see how the performer role-play as the character in each period from bottom to the top, which is where the THING/COUNTERTHING situated. In each step of the timeline, the environment in the audience rings and also performer rings change. On the top of the mountain, the visitor can look around in every directions to see how the information spread to the other visitors, while he or she is being the performer at the same time.

Hi Cat,
ReplyDeleteSounds very interesting! I think the general set-up seems very promising. And putting the mask in the centre seems logical and then working with rings as you propose. My main comments would have to do with the places and moments where you proposes (as for as I understand) to show information on some kind of boards or plains. This information should be spatial like everything else. So for instance. the materials its made of, its history who its put on by the performer in a ceremonious way should all be shown spatially in the space. Perhaps even the story of Ramayana. As I picture your space, it will be full of people as the Mask relates constantly to people. I think that your proposed relationship between the performer and the audience is super interesting and perhaps you could push this a bit further and say that depending on where you stand you see the mask though different frames or scenes that could even be two dimensional. It then will begin to discuss the subjective or matters of concerns about the thing and counter thing. The mask is nothing without its context on the stage, with the dance and the narrative. Or the museum, or a resort on Phuket for Scandinavian tourists. I just emailed you a photograph of a souvenir from the Great Exhibition in London. Its just a series of two dimensional planes that together create a 3D space. I would also look at these two great films:
The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (2009)
Anna Karenina (2012)
Both about stages and shifting of perspectives.
