Chatuchak Market as the thoroughfare

This is the newer version of the isonometric drawing of my thoroughfare. I have erased the parts of the thoroughfare that were not being observed by my eyes while giving the objects that were merely glanced a translucent quality. The dark big blue neon line shows the path I've taken through  the thoroughfare while the small lines branching from it is the line of sight. The blue highlighted area on the drawing indicates the area that with closer observation that leaves a psychological impact on me.

Reading Complexity Updates : ISO drawing of thoroughfare

My thoroughfare start in the middle of Khao San Road where I looked around to be aware of cars  and surrounding first before moving. The purple cone shape is my field of vision, in which the cone's sharp point is where I am standing and the base of the cone direct the area I'm looking. The part of a building that has been colored means the place where my eyes focus on along the thoroughfare, and the white part is what I'm not looking at.

Updates on ISO drawing of thoroughfare

This is an update on the isometric drawing of the thoroughfare. I have added people that I attended to along the route I took as well as things that were on display at certain stands I looked at. I have differentiated the cones of vision into two categories. The first (fill) concerns objects/people that directly affected on how I speculated the space which had influenced my decision to move within the immediate environment. The latter (no fill) concerns those that had no impact on the path I chose to walk on.

First Draft of Reading complexity; JJ market

My thoroughfare takes place in JJ market, the biggest weekend market in Thailand. It consists of different zones catagorised by the selling products such as plants, clothing, furniture, cutleries, potteries, pet, etc. This place is packed with tourists and locals shopping and roaming in the heat.

The section that I visited is a pet zone. The reason why it relates to my 'Thing' will be explained on Thursday.

Here are drawings of how my video will be translated visually according to my sudden perception right on spot.

The lady shouted out '100 baht for one short-hair rabbit discounted from 200 baht'

noted that current currency exchange rate is 1 pound to 50.10 baht.

This sweaty man walked out of the shop with a plastic bag. He had brought something which drew my eyes immediately to the sign that indicated price of the goods.

This conscious lady turned around and stared at my face for a second when I was standing behind her to get the best look at the rabbits.

This scary looking man was casually stand at the corner speaking on the phone. His entire look caught my eyes. However, his dress and his piercing symbolise tribal characteristic. I made sure that I keep myself distant from him.

This man was playing with the squeaky chicken toy. The sounds radiate into my ears.

Cat collars was on the display made me think of my cat at home. 'May be he needs a new collar?'

My next step is to make 3 D model of my thoroughfare and includes all the elements that I attended to.

Reading Complexity: Pak Khlong Talat

My thouroughfare takes place in the very busy flower market : Pak Khlong Talat, Occupying a huge open warehouse roof, the area consists of all flower vendors, constantly moving in and out for delivery and keeping stocks. Located on the Chak Phet road, the roads are filled with trucks and vans with massive amount of flowers to be displaced within the market. Almost every person would have their hands busy with a pack of flowers. Ranging from orchids, marigolds, jasmines, roses : each had unique style of packing either in small quantity or large. Being a wet market, it's recommended to wear slippers.

In my previous phase of the project, I dealt with the Saweta Chatra Throne from which the concept of framing, ornamentation, orientation, symmetry and importance/value were developed. After my initial thoroughfares including the Benjasiri park and Chulalongkorn Campus Library : it referenced the concept somewhat directly. So furthermore when discussed it was asked whether to have a thoroughfare directly questioning the validity of importance. How does a thing become important, to what degree? Hence I chose the Pak Khlong Talat which is a potential space of possessing things that all have the same importance yet shout out its own attention to our eyes. The balance is diminished and the importance of a bunch of flowers or a certain texture as how Latour puts it, is judged by the person. We move closer to the attracted thing because of its aesthetic appeal, ornamentation highly visual.

One of the direct attractions were that of the green orchids which I never witnessed before that lead me to view it closer. The rest of the flowers pre-existed in my mind and lead to a with-drawed attention. The concluded addition to my concept of framing was that in order to achieve visual importance, especially when dealing with an object: one has to carefully and skillfully ornament it so as to provoke beauty. Further analysis would involve in producing the actual Talat space and my route of travelling.

READING COMPLEXITY : KHAO SAN ROAD

Khao San Road is one of the must visit attraction for tourist when coming to Thailand, but not for the local thai people. As for me, I never been there so this thoroughfare is very interesting in term of the meaning, related to my work in previous phase. As in the previous phase, I dealed with the idea of role playing. Therefore in the thoroughfare, I'm looking for something performing or role playing to express the meaning of Thainess (in this case) and its audience or viewer. As in the vdo, not only the people is performing but things and architecture too are trying to represent Thailand. And of course, the audiences here are the foreigners. Each of them has different expression toward different role playing things.

I moved from a wide open space to a more enclose space to see the different orientation of the role playing things and its audience, also their reaction toward each others.

The thoroughfare I have chosen is the Wat leng Nei Ye II at Nonthaburi. It is a grand Chinese Temple which is often filled with tourist. The architecture itself is rich in ornaments and was built with somewhat a God scale that astound the viewer right at the first glance. As I move along the path, the scale and detail of the architecture surges which causes my visual focus to drift from spot to spot before arriving at the main hall where the three gigantic Buddha image is placed.   

In the isonometric the lime green line shows the path I've taken and the green line branching from it is the line of vision to the focusing point. The green highlighted objects are the visual targets. The rest is the detail of the temple showing the atmosphere and the level of details of the ornaments, things that have impacts to my vision.

Here is the video of the chosen thoroughfare taken at Sampeng market at the Bangkok Chinatown. The walking distance is of 2:03 minutes to reach the end of the block, out to the more open, yet busy intersection where locals, travellers, street vendors and automobiles converge. The street was enclosed by old shophouses. Both sidewalks were occupied by stands selling many things forcing people to take the street as they roam around the place. This, in a way, gave priority to the people, instead of cars, to walk in the middle of the street which slowed down the traffic whenever cars drove by. People would cluster to the side to make way. 

The Isometric drawing represents the path that I took. The cones describe my visual field where each one amounts to 60 degree angle. They originate from the height of my eye level. I am planning to readjust the colors of the cones to differentiate the types of things I paid attention to including animate and inanimate subjects which had impacted on how I reacted to and moved in the space. 

Reading Complexity 2nd draft: Papaya Warehouse

Papaya Warehouse is the splendid place that give a new experience exploring the different object from different tine in one place, it's like riding a time machine through time and lead the visitor to their childhood time that they may overlook some of the memories and this place bring it place in the matter of time.

Once i step into this place which really amaze me with numerous 30th-90th stuff surrounded me, and when i walked inside the warehouse which have 3 floors with very high ceiling and fill up with all the stuff hanging around and putting them in the category of usage and some are randomly place in the space.

For the update process which i'm working on the 3d model and analyse the video and visions that i'm looking or focusing on one object at a time or many object at a time, which in the isometric drawing represent in the in shape and colour, such as a pink cone represent the visions to what i am looking at and change the object by object, and the blue colour represent the object that i focusing on.
