Animation in the process + Final Thesis
Territories of Value
A virtual treasure room for Siam
The Value theory compose
of a range to understand how, why and to what degree people value things;
whether the thing is a person, idea, object, or anything else.
This project aim to present the virtual treasure room for
Siam, the collection of Thai heritage treasure. Giving the new
experience of how the object virtually exhibit and kept in virtual age. This
new inventive treasure room enhances the relationship between object and visitor. Different perspectives can be
interpreted and presented according to the visitor’s evaluation of the value.
To evaluate
and interpret the meaning of the value nowadays, we depend on the degree or
amount of value that ties to human needs and wants, as well as memories.
What makes a thing
valuable? And to whom? How do we keep, exhibit and protect valuable things? And
who decides what makes a things valuable or not?
Evaluation of value has
been extended from the range of individual personal level to the bigger scale
of national level or cultural level, How does a culture agree on what is
valuable and not? Example from the museums, the council
meeting decision and voting process from the nominated treasures and
collections made the criteria of choice.
The matter of fact and
the matter of concern were taken a big part of how we perceive the value of the
object. Bruno Latour mentioned about the value as
matter of fact and matter of concern, example
from the object, the matter of fact has it own limit of what it is and The
matter of concern were extended out with how we visualize the object.
Thai heritage temple, Wat
Ratchaburana, Ayutthaya, Thailand, is the most valuable Phra Prang in Thailand.
It was built by King Chao Samphaya in 1424, with the specific purpose to kept
the treasure and dedicated to his two brothers. The complexity of value through the
layers inside, while approach into the treasure room create the hierarchy and
the expression of the shell and the essence part inside Phra Prang. Today simple
brick with simple ornament outside show the trace of past time, rich of ornaments
with color, shape, form and material. Recently leaded people to the
underestimated of the value, but once get inside Prang the value reveals itself
through the treasure underneath. Express the different layers from outside surface
with ornaments, along with the laterite brick structure and the treasure room
innermost. Phraprang was to contain and protect the valuable treasure inside,
while it can communicate and express value through the surface. Treasure is a concentration of riches and power,
often one that is considered lost or forgotten until being rediscovered. The treasure inside was
discovered by Silpakorn department and taken out into Chao Samphaya museum for
its own safety and exhibition after a group of thief stole all the treasure.
The treasure room today contains no treasure inside, but left the trace of
Ayutthaya painting that symbolize the Buddha story.
Museum was extracts each object from its own original environment and
transfer into the new site in the museum. All the treasure was kept inside a
building in a room and in the glass box, which make people further away to
approach and interact with the object through the glass surface.
Today much of value theory
is scientifically study, recording what people do value and attempting to
understand why they value it in the context of psychology, sociology, and
economics.
The complexity of value
that ties to our own perception and evaluation was experimented in the Papaya
Warehouse, Bangkok. The experiment video shows the gather of antique
object in the same splendid place, giving the new experience through the route
in each step. The hierarchy shown through the categories of individual value,
sociology value and economy value that represent in different hierarchy of
information and graphic. Example from the chair, table and poster. Exploring the space inside. The route and the quality
of attention, sequence of perception,
scanning
and looking with different kind of the object and try to extract the value
behind it.
Who wants to see the
treasures? And why? Why is it important to show and experience treasures of
past time? Could be for national and cultural promotion or propaganda, could be
for educational purposes, perhaps it could also be for sentimental and
emotional reasons.
The value that ties to the memories, which empower the power through the
vehicle as a treasure using by King Rama V. The Royal palanquin is now in
Bangkok National Museum to communicate the power from the past Ayutthaya history
to the present day, the value communicates through the materials and Thai
ornaments that symbolize the monarchy. Another contemporary example that can
compare with is “The Beast” President Barack Obama’s limousine. The Beast
communicated the power through the shell as a skin to protect president inside,
with the hidden specific function inside, it symbolize the democracy. Both
object ornaments communicate the power and value through the median of the
shell and skin of the surface.
As travel along the street, both objects signify the power and variety
of value through the journey along the road. To communicate the value of both actual
power and visual power, by the level change of the width and height of the
road.
The space is to design the complexity in different scale, higher the
road is higher actual power, wider of the road is the wider of the visual power.
The visitor can experience all the
information and meaning through the journey passing both objects along with the
street environment from both sides.
The virtual grammars are
representing time, location, history, distance, material and value. Also how both
object perform and use with people in specific period.
In modern digital age, technology
involved being a part of our precious value memories, through the picture and
collection of data, bring back and recover to capture the moment anytime.
Leap motion glasses become
the evaluation tools of Thai heritage treasure. Tracking the visitor motion and
analyze in real-time, the glasses enable the user to see three-dimensional
images which give an illusion of depth of perception. Body gesture sends
signals to adjust the images seen by the user as they move around their
environment.
Now we are able to visualize and interact with the treasure and
becoming the part of their existing.
This new
revolution of dealing with treasures and heritage allows individuals and groups
to interact with the objects, and nominate new ones.
In the virtual treasure room, visitors are able to see and interact with
Thai heritage treasure that are nominated and voted from people. The collection of treasure located according to the time, location,
and procedure complexity. Walking and looking around Phraprang with
scatter of the treasure floating around and the collection of data attach to
the treasure. Visitor can explore Thai heritage treasure by rotating object and
looking through the different information of the specific treasure.
New and contemporary treasures nominated by the registered user. Only Thai
register able to get inside the real treasure room one person at a time.
Entering by an individual password in order to get inside. Interact with the
virtual treasures, nominating and voting treasure would be base on the matter
of fact and matter of concern. By
voting and evaluating the object base on individual perception, voting criteria
and popularity shown on the surface and covered the object.
The virtual
treasure room will change the way of how people behave and perceive the
collection of the Thai treasure, also contribute and develop new forms of relationship
between people and object. Enhancing the collective of information and
technology to promote the social dimension of a new digital creativity that
link to the actual cultural treasure. Are you ready for the future?

The Impression Keeper
Final Presentation Trial from Marcmorak on Vimeo.
THE IMPRESSION KEEPER
Millions of
photographs are taken digitally every day and are spread over websites and
servers. It could be said that people take photographs to be the reminder of
their identity in time. For an individual, a photograph is a valuable impression,
for someone else a photograph could be something very different. Photographs
are consider as individual’s “value of impressions” that identify each
identity. This project virtually integrate and bring impression and past
impression back into one hub that could be justify to individuals’ need. Millions
of “value of impressions” are spread all over in the world every day.
Visual perceptions
are like consistent snapshots that we put together. Our eyes processes information
every split second weather we know what it is or not. In order to perceive the world clearly, we have to stop and capture or analyse that moment still. Therefore people choose to capture these moments or impressions from photography. Exploring Bangkok is like taking 60
photographs every second. In these photos we see what we are intended and not
intended to see, depending on our chose of perception in that situation and
moment in time. (Reading Complexity) Impressions could be change according to the
choice of decision of how we perceive what we had confront in both objective
and subjective way. (In this diagram, the blue screens are the division of
interface between the thing and the people. What they had focus and extracted
would be imprinted on to the blue screen to indicate the choice of perception
and view point.) (Thing & Counter Thing) Separation of many small
objects are combine together to be one full experience like the warrior
elephant. (Grammar) We experience impression as a whole and not form one
single pieces. We don’t look at one
thing, we absorb everything at once. (Virtual Space)
The vantage
point changes the experience and attitude toward object. One whole impression
could be change according to time, position, side, and equip. (In the virtual
space, the visitor could move freely as if they are in the real world. The
space had been design specifically for the visitor to be able to experience and
perceive the thing and counter thing from different point of perception. The
visitor could interface the thing from different period of time base on the
position they are at. For example. The visitor could be in the present looking
back to the ceremonial happening in the ancient time. According to the division
of interface that imply intimidation, the visitor could be the least powerful
in the space also be the most powerful while being in the virtual space. (Virtual
Space)
(The
PraSriSanPet Temple is one of the main attractions of Ayutthaya, It is a must
for tourist or television media to visit the 3 famous stupas when coming to
Ayutthaya. Before in the “Ramatibade 1st” Period, this area used to
be a palace. However in “Trailoknark” Period, He move and rebuild the palace to
the North and turn this area to a Royal Temple to perfume ceremony. Therefore
there is no monk in the area. Later when Trailoknark died in 1492, the first
Jedi was built for him and his son; “Somdet Pra Barom Rachaterad 2” by his
younger son “Somdet Pra Rama Tebadi 2”. After that, the last Jedi was built for
“Somdet Pra Rama Tebadi” himself in 1499.) (The main site that people pays
attention the most is the Mondop own by “Trailoknark”. Tourist would walk in to
the temple and first stop by the information boot. They would look at the 3D
model and look up to the real temple and take their first snapshot of impression
there. After that, they would walk to the pathway and post to take their second
snapshots of impression. They would then continue to go up to the Mondop and
take their third snapshots of impression. This is the main circulation that
could be seen while visiting the site.) (Ayutthaya Diagrams)
Photographs are
collections of impressions. How could we go back to choose the impression that
we want and is requisite to our moment in that time? Hence, a hub that could
help us find these “valuable impressions”. What if this hub can help us seek the
past impressions we want?
Creating a
virtual hub, The Impression keeper could track down impressions and past
impressions and display it within the frame that we want. It is like a 3D
sharing network of experience and photographs. People could come to The
Impression Keeper to look at other’s people past impression or purposely
create their own impressions to be display to the world virtually and 3 dimensionally.
Having The
Impression Keeper, it would enhance a new experience and objectives of why
people want to come to The PraSriSanPet Temple. Their new aim would be to come
to the site to create impressions or to revisit the past impressions created by
people from the history. People would come to create an artificial impression
that deals with the history of the site. Photographs are collection of elements
and fragments. Being in The Impression Keeper, we could extract and
display or hide what we want or not want to see from the projected photographs
of past impressions and present impressions. The elements could be split up and
quantify to the specific needs. Millions of impressions will be projected on to
the exact location that it had been taken. Therefore, there will be overlapping
of different impressions base on different period of time. Instead of using a
3D scanner on the site to collect these data, we use people’s natural desire to
create impression to collect the data instead. With The Impression Keeper,
we could extract elements and fragments to know all the data like the 3D scanner
such as the circulation, weather, birds, decay, movement, and experience. (Virtual
Space; Ayutthaya)
When entering The
Impression keeper, the visitor will have a case that would be attached to
their camera device. This camera tracking device will be link to the sensors
all around The PraSriSanPet temple. Therefore, as soon as the visitor create an
impression, that impression will automatically be save to the data with the
information of time, location, and identity. This data would be collecting all
the impressions and save to the server and could be share and view anytime and
anybody. This technology would create a new experience of visiting space and
increase the purpose of visiting a specific space. It could be brought to
tourist attraction, role playing, conservationist, and etc. (Virtual
Space; Ayutthaya)

Thing and counterthing animated diagram / project thesis update
with a voice over test
The architectural role-playing is a virtual role-playing interface for education and entertainment that links the physical site event to any location of the world.
The historical site disclose a long story that happened long way back into the past. The stories are discovered from the leftover hint that scattered around a historical area by a researcher who eager to reveal the quest of the past. The historical story shows how the past was reshaping a long timeline of mankind's history as well as current culture.
However, the people in the past cannot survive to tell the story themselves while a thing that survived as a hint to track down the past is an architecture, known as the ruin. The ruin is a naked form of a building where its exposed the basis of an architecture through the remnants. It is an essence of architecture where any possibilities can be explore as a stage for imagination, because it presents so little proof of its original use. So the imagination that people put on the ruin is a mask that tell the story of the past.
As for people, they also put a mask to disguised an identity of themselves. For instance, the Cosplay event. It is where people dress up and act as other imaginary characters. This action of covering oneself with a mask and not being yourself is role-playing. The Khon mask or, more contemporary, the stormtrooper's cosplay mask are the example of a role-playing tools that use for narrating a story or expressing the meaning of something with the purpose of spreading the information to various types of people intentionally or unintentionally, so the performer and audience relationship is both benefited. The performers turn from their self into the characters, in which the level of identity of oneself can be measured by examining the reaction and respond from the audience toward the performers, while looking at the action of the performers themselves. And it can be experiment by producing a virtual performer and audience interactive platform where the related virtual grammars have been combined.
In architectural terms, it is different because the mask is not termed as a mask, but an ornament instead. So this virtual interface can be applied to any ruins in the world because the ruin itself is like an architectural essence, in which any ornaments can be put on. Because the ruin reveals a form of a construction that is a basic foundation of any architectural project, as well as, the contemporary buildings structure that reveal a basic shape, without meaning, when no architectural mask has been put on. The architectural mask is the ornaments that changes identity of each type of a building. Same as for a person that uses costume or make up to change their outer appearance for a purpose of differentiation to his or her original identity.
Ayutthaya is one of many historical site around the world that considered as 'world heritage' by UNESCO. One of the famous ancient structure at Ayutthaya is the grand vihara ruin at Wat Phrasrisanpetch. Only some part of the wall, floor and column were remained as the ruin structure. Dr. Sanurr Nildech, the expert in Ayutthaya's archaeology, has mentioned in his book about the ornamentation, survived till the present time, explain that the early Ayutthaya is the period in historical timeline where the Grand Vihara came from. Also the used of the building in the past were told by the leftover structure and ornamentation, even nowadays it is a tourist attraction.
Therefore, the architectural role-play interface will act as a messenger between the past, present and future. The interface consists of three phases respectively including the Grand Vihara (Ayutthaya), the organization and online software. At the Grand Vihara, the virtual interface captures the image of each person's architectural mask in the ruin, thereby projecting that image to the real site through the 'role-play glasses' that each site user receives at first. The architectural mask is an idea of how each person uses his or her own architectural background or pre-experience to apply it on the ruin structure, in other words 'architecture identity role-play'. For example, a Burmese is would ideally have an image of Burmese column on top of the existing column at the site. In the end, each site user will create an event, which is an overall play setting that comes from all masked images put together and plays a story which is an activity that is performed in the setting. Each person also provides with different identity gauge. Identity gauge is how the identity changed through the level of ornament that has been put on to define which stage of reality the architectural setting is in. Moreover, each site user with background and pre-experience will create a different level of role-playing resolution for the architectural mask. This means some people will only need a few lines to create their own element.
The information, then, transfers to the organization which collects it into the database. The organization is a control center of the whole system, consisting of 5 departments which are database, user control, representative, technical and role-play specialist. Also, the information appears in the computer online application where it evaluates the information origin, connection and timeline. In this stage, any online user can look into their interested ruin and join the event that happen in each ruin in version of their hologram image project onto the real site.
Different advantages were provided for different type of users. The site users can create their own event, participate, observe, and record the created event. The online users can cannot create their own event but can create an event from the database, participate, observe, and record any events. With these activities ongoing, the researchers or academicians, on the related topics, will get to explore and experiment the behavior and information of many people from either site user and online user. Then analyze the information for the future profit such as conservation of the ancient ruin. So that this action can lead to the real conclusion on the real events at the real site.

Divergence
of the Buddhist Experience
Creative Platform of Experience Manifestation
For long, Buddhism has spread and materialize its ideology
and teachings through the experience created by architecture and ceremonies
that the Buddhist perceive in order to plant and manifest the idea into ones
mind. Religions have always use tangible matters to create a designated
experiences for the users and believer as a method of implanting the teachings.
Things like architecture, murals, and, ornaments are a tool to portray and
deliver the message through the perception of the viewer. Divergence of the Buddhist
Experience is a virtual space that allows the user to illustrate and
materialize their envisagement of the experience that they desire to enhance
the Buddhist practices and ceremonies according to the individual preference. Each
contribution from the user will then be used to form a creative network
platform that act as an archive to store all the designed virtual spaces that
can be shared and accessed by every user. The virtual space accessible both
online and onsite. The constructed virtual space will be used to house virtual
16 meters tall Phra Sri San Phet, the same as what the Grand Hall used to
function. Each space will then be used for Buddhist practices and ceremonies,
accessible by the people onsite and online.
By analyzing the elements in religious places or spaces, one
will find that every single element is designed with a specific grammar in order
to create a desired effect. At Wat Leng Nei Yi II in Nonthaburi, many
elements such as Buddha image and ornaments that contain this ethereal quality,
acting as a portal of mind that brings people to other place within their inner
consciousness which is a place they themselves created.
Both the Bussabok and the 9/11 Memorial shares
the same logic in which its physical quality was designed to with similar
qualities to the designated ethereal space, either through shapes, form, or the
experience that they give off. They all have a specific language that once analyzed,
can be extract and rearrange, introducing a sequence or diversity, a way these
object can be perceive to better experience and understand it. Once a
rearranged, a virtual grammar is formed, leading to the construction of the
virtual pavilion, in this case Portal of the Inner Conciousness. It is a
space that brings the analysis of the two objects together and take the
advantage of the spatial quality to, forming a new sequence of perception and
comparison between the two. By being in the space, people may be able to
scrutinize and experience the quality of these objects.
With this same core concept, Divergence of the Buddhist
Experience enables the user to manifest and illustrate their inner
consciousness, the way how they envisage the space through the existing Phra
Sri San Phet virtual Buddha Image. The Thai Buddhist ceremonies was
analyzed to see how each one is carried out and what elements are essential to
create the necessary experience of each ceremony. After extracting all the
essential elements, the virtual grammar is created, acting as a tool for the
user to construct their own virtual space. Here in the virtual space, the
grammar are the choices and scope of the design that the user will be dealing
with, contributing a new diversity for the existing Buddhist practice.
The user who is on the real physical site of Wat Phra Sri
Sanphet Grand Hall will be granted access to the design interface via the
creative virtual headset consisting of a virtual ocular device with a camera
attachment to record the surroundings, a hand gesture recognition device, and a
built in open back headphone, allowing them to see, hear, and manipulate the
virtual elements respectively, of both the design interface and the constructed
virtual space. Only the user onsite will be able to construct the virtual space
as they will be able to perceive and scrutinize the context, ambient
atmosphere, and variables of the physical site. The user will be given the
constructed virtual grammar that act as a foundation where they will be
constructing upon. Every architectural design element will be placed on the same
existing layout of the ruin.
The design interface aids the user by enabling the new perception
through transition of reality such as the ability to see sound, enhancing the
creativity and as well as truly understand every single choice and element that
they choose.
Each choice being made will be shown to the user instantly
so that they may experience their creation in real time to achieve the desired
effects. They will interact with the design interface through physical body
contact with the virtual elements which will response with the user for every
certain body gesture. Once the virtual space has been constructed, it will be
stored in the online archive of each individual account. It is an interactive
platform where different users can access and experience every virtual space
through the same medium of the virtual headset and a 3d scanner to record their
body and transform that into digital format into the online network. This
network allows the Buddhist society from all around the world to form a new
community through virtual space that doesn’t just give the user conventional
spaces but a holistic archive where contribution creates the network itself. The
users are able to interact with other online and onsite user who chooses the
same space to perform the practices and ceremonies together.
This interactive network is designed to blur the demarcation
of ideology on how Buddhist practices and ceremonies should be experience.
Being a core of the space, the Buddha image act as a portal in which the user
is able to materialize and manifest their thoughts of the new space should be.
This space embraces different perspectives from both Buddhist and non-Buddhist
user, creating a divergence to enhance the experience.

to kept the treasure and dedicated to his two brothers. The complexity of
value through the layers inside, while approach into the treasure room create
the hierarchy and the expression of the shell and the essence part inside Phra
Prang. Today simple brick with simple ornament outside show
the trace of past time which rich of ornaments with color, shape, form and material. Recently leaded to the
underestimated of the value, but once get inside Prang the value reveal itself
through the treasure underneath. Express the different
layers from outside surface with ornaments, along with the laterite brick
structure and the treasure room innermost. Phraprang was to contain and protect
the valuable treasure inside, while it can communicate and express value
through the surface. Treasure
is a concentration of riches and power, often one that is considered lost or
forgotten until being rediscovered. The treasure inside was discovered by Silpakorn
department and taken out into Chao Samphaya museum for its own safety and
exhibition. The treasure room today contains no treasure
inside, but left the trace of Ayutthaya painting that symbolize the Buddha
story.
Museum was extracts each object from its own origin
environment and transfer into the new site in the museum. All the treasure was
kept inside a building in a room and in the glass box, which make people
further away to approach and interact with the object through the glass surface.
In the world
of technology, things change and developed through the median of technology. By
means of information technologies, interaction between different dimensions and
attribute them in different functions and degrees of importance according to
the reality that we need to represent. This new way of dealing with treasures and heritage
allows individuals and groups to interact with the objects, and nominate new
ones.
To evaluate and
interpret the meaning of the value nowadays, we depend on the degree or amount
of value that ties to human needs and wants, as well as memories. Technology
involved being a part of our precious value memories, through the picture and
collection of data, bring back and recover to capture the moment anytime.
The complexity of value
that ties to our own perception and evaluation was experimented in the Papaya
Warehouse, Bangkok. The experiment video show the gather of antique object in the same
splendid place, giving the new experience through the route in each steps,
scanning and looking with different kind of the object and try to extract the
value behind it. The hierarchy shown through the categories of individual value,
sociology value and economy value that represent in different hierarchy of
information and graphic. The example show from the
table and chair with the…
The value that ties to the memories, which empower the power through the
vehicle as a treasure using by the King Rama V. The Royal palanquin is now in Bangkok
National Museum to communicate the power from the history to the present day,
the value communicates through the materials of monarchy. Another example that
can compare with, “The Beast” President Barack Obama’s limousine that
communicate the power through the shell as a skin protected inside and
symbolize the democracy. The ornaments communicate the power through the median
of the shell and skin of the surface.
As travel along the street, signify the power and variety of value
through the journey along the road. To communicate the value of both actual
power and visual power, by the level change of the width and height of the road.
The space is to design the complexity in different scale, higher the road is
higher actual power, wider of the road is the wider of the visual power.
In design of the 3D virtual space make the question arise of the way
we evaluate the value in our virtual age. Sociology, Psychology and Economy
satisfied our needs and want.
P.S. the red one is additional text from the last time, also i haven't put in the virtual space explanation, because i'm still not sure about it.
